Sukhna Lake: A Cherished City Landmark
Sukhna Lake holds a special place in Chandigarh’s heart. The city’s planners had a deep fondness for this lake, evident in the immersion of Pierre Jeanneret’s ashes in 1970 as per his niece’s request.
A Leisurely Stroll along the ‘Bandh’
The dam’s roof has become a popular spot for leisurely walks. It’s where dedicated walkers maintain their exercise routine, families take evening strolls, and nature enthusiasts mix with children on roller skates. Photographers and painters find inspiration in the scenic beauty of sunsets, the monsoon sky, or the misty winter mornings by the serene lake. Even anglers find success here.
Recreation and Relaxation at Lake Club
Sukhna boasts a membership-based Lake Club with lawns, a gym, indoor games, over four swimming pools, and spacious tennis courts, both grass and synthetic. Boating, rowing, sculling, sailing, kayaking, and water-skiing are year-round attractions.

The lake hosted the Asian Rowing Championships and features the longest channel for rowing and yachting events in Asia.
A Sanctuary for Migratory Birds
In winter, Sukhna welcomes exotic migratory birds like Siberian ducks, storks, and cranes, earning it the status of a protected national wetland by the Government of India.
Community Efforts for Lake Maintenance
During the summer months, people from all walks of life come together to voluntarily desilt the lake bed for about three months, a tradition upheld for years.
Festive Celebrations at Sukhna Lake
The lake serves as the venue for various festive celebrations, including the popular Mango Festival during the monsoons, showcasing numerous mango varieties. Additionally, special festivals featuring specialties from different Indian states and cultural performances are held from time to time.
